Fabiola ๐จ๐ญKitchen, Haus Hiltl
Gira amahoro! This means as much as “peace be with you” in Kirundi – my mother tongue from Burundi. ๐ง๐ฎ โ I’m Fabiola and I’ve been working in the kitchen at Haus Hiltl since 2019. ๐ฅ ๐ณ What I love about working at Hiltl is the mutual respect for each other in all teams. That’s not a given with so many different cultures – a real melting pot in the kitchen. ๐
Before I moved to Switzerland with my husband in 2011, we owned a Swiss restaurant together in Uganda, where I whipped up delicious Swiss delicacies. ๐ง ๐ฅ It was going extremely well, but we had to leave the country because of the upcoming war – I didn’t want to experience this trauma a 2nd time. ๐ When I was 12 years old, a civil war broke out between two tribes in Burundi. My parents were brutally murdered in front of my eyes. Fortunately, my 6 siblings and I survived. Although we all live scattered around the world, we have never been as close as we are now. ๐ Every year we meet again in Uganda in my house, which I built with my sweat and hands, it’s also the only place I want to grow old in.
Respect each other. Love is stronger than hate. Here at the Hiltl, I learned to love and respect animals for their empathy and intelligence. ๐ฎ๐ท Respect your fellow human beings in the same way: In Switzerland, refugees from both tribes of Burundi meet and are friends. ๐ค Open your heart and you will receive love back. ๐
